Exchange Server 2007 is applied only with Windows 64-bit x86-64 variants. It can be v8 or v8.1 used with SP1. But it features only supported editions and a 32-bit trial edition is open to everyone. Anyway some companies will have to replace the hardware they are applying for they go on operating in Exchange Server with 32-bit hardware. Also it happens so that the firms are using previous 2000/2003 Exchange Server even with 64-bit equipment. In this case they will have to move to the edition of 2007 as it doesn’t let in-place upgrades.
E12, the first beta version of Exchange Server 2007, was let out in winter of 2005 for the first time for a little number of testers. As reported in Microsoft Exchange team archives a developed beta edition appeared in March 2006. It was accessible via TechNet Plus and MSDN subscriptions. And then in April 2005 the enterprise confidently claimed the new edition of the program to have the name of Exchange Server 2007.
In fact Exchange Server 2007 is included into those Innovative Communications Alliance developments. These are the hosting exchange server roles of Microsoft Exchange 2007:
1. MB (Mailbox)
It functions as a host for mail and differentn available to public. Mailbox is a facility to host user folder information and store user mail. But there may be a different case. For clustering mailbox information with high-availability MSCS Clustered Mailbox role is applied. But it is not allowed to combine any different roles on the microsoft exchange server with this variation of Mailbox.
2. Client Access or CA
Client Access doesn’t apply MAPI, it is meant for another mailbox hosting protocol access. Like that it’s affordable for the user to reach his mail with an Internet browser, mobile gadget and third party mail client. Absolutely like in Exchange 2003 FrontEnd server.
3. Unified Message or UM
The role turns it as well available to apply telephones to enter mailboxes, note books or anything. This type of role demands supplementary equipment like an IP-PBX gateway aimed to let the role function correctly.
4. Hub Transport or HT
Arranging messages and classifying them according to the route of each is the task of HT. Exchange 2007 classifies the mail amounts using AD site info, that differs from the strategy of 2003 when admin defined routing groups were applied.
5. The Role of Edge Transport
That is the first position for incoming mail and the last one for outgoing. In sharepoint hosting ET is thought to be a very handy role. It’s applied to cater for mail quarantine. It seems as well reasonable that the role doesn’t demand Active Directory admission. Working with limited admission to some company’s network is well enough for it to provide safety.
Features of Server Roles and User Interface
Server configuration for Graphic User Interface and Cmdlet are connected with the server role idea. For every destination there is its special role in Exchange 2007. As for Mailbox, its function is Get/Set-MailboxServer and the command to check whether it is installed is IsMailboxServer. And so that is Get/Set-ClientAccessServer and IsClientAccessServer for Client Access role. Hub Transport role possessing features Get/Set-TransportServer will be simply proved with IsHubTransportServer. And commands like IsUnifiedMessagingServer and Get/Set-UmServer are referred to UM role.
